ClearType Tuner

It turns out that ClearType, mostly for the purpose of making fonts easier to read on laptops, is "tune-able" (customizable). By now you all know about ClearType and if you don't then you can learn all about it by following this link; ClearType information. Basically, instead of using your own computer to tune it there's a handy dandy online internet Microsoft® wizard that will enable you to do it on your own, step by step, to your own liking:

ClearType Tuner Step 1: Turn on Windows XP ClearType

Note: You may receive a warning about an ActiveX object. You will want to accept the download. Trust me, you can trust it.

It's nice to be able to adjust these settings on a laptop or a tablet PC but for CRT monitors it's basically a waste of time. You can also achieve the same with the ClearType Tuner PowerToy, if for any reason you wish to not make these adjustmenment while connected to the internet.

Turning off ClearType
To turn off ClearType either run the wizard again and select the option that turns off ClearType...

OR try this...

  1. Press WinKey + R to bring up the Run... dialog
  2. Type control desktop and click OK
  3. In the "Display Properties" dialog click the Appearance tab
  4. Then click the "Effects..." button
  5. Choose desired setting(s) and click OK
