Desktop Items

The Windows XP® Operating System does have fewer icons on the desktop than the older operating systems but they aren't always something that you might want to use. It is possible to go ahead and clean them up if you'd like.

Follow these directions:

  1. Press WinKey + R to bring up the Run dialog box
  2. Type control desktop
  3. Press the Enter key
  4. Click the Desktop tab
  5. Click the Customize Desktop button

From there you'll now see that you have a whole bunch of new options available to you that you may or may not have noticed before.

General Tab

Desktop icons
Under "Desktop icons" you're given the option to show or hide the following:

· My Documents
· My Computer
· My Network Places
· Internet Explorer

Merely 'check' the ones you want to show on the desktop and 'uncheck' the ones you don't want to show.

Select icons
Below that you're given the chance to change the icons for the above and even the icons for the recycle bin for when it's empty or when it contains items.

You can browse your computor for icons to use, or if you're interested in finding some alternatives you can always search on the internet. Searching is pretty basic but here's a link to get you started; MSN Search: free icons.

Desktop cleanup
Here you can start Desktop Cleanup Wizard right away by clicking the "Clean Desktop Now" button. Also you can set the Desktop Cleanup Wizard to run every 60 days or if you don't want it to run automatically (every 60 days), leave the checkbox empty, and click OK.

Web Tab

Under the Web tab you'll be given the chance to show a web page of your choice on the desktop as your background. You can even opt to synchronize the page if you want so that you'll have the most current version of the page displayed. Clicking on the "New" button will offer you the chance to go to the Microsoft gallery and select an item from there. For a preview of what would be offered if you selected to add them to your active desktop click this link:

Internet Explorer 4.0 Desktop Gallery

Clicking on the "Properties" tab and then on the schedule tab will allow you to set your scheduled times for updating the content or setting it so that you limit the times it updates to doing so only when you select to sync them. If you want to do it manually then all you'd need to do is open Internet Explorer and click on Tools and then click on Synchronize.

Finally there's an option to lock the desktop items. Putting a tick into this box will result in your icons being locked into place and no amount of dragging, kicking, screaming, swearing, or voodoo will result in them moving again until something either becomes corrupt or you've unticked this box.
