Missing CD/DVD Drives

It's not entirely unknown for the CD/DVD drives to suddenly go AWOL from Explorer and not function at all. You may get an error when you try to access them, burn with them, or they may simply disappear.

The easiest way to go ahead and clear this up (and it's usually effective) is to head to get an application made by Doug Knox MVP:

· Restore CD/DVD Drives to Explorer

Sometimes that doesn't work. Fortunately there's more than one way to skin a cat. You can manually fix it, hopefully, by removing the UpperFilters and LowerFilters values from the registry.

Before attempting the following make sure you read and understand Registry Editing Warning.

  1. Press WinKey + R to bring up the Run... dialog
  2. Type regedit
  3. Press the Enter key
  4. In the Registry Editor navigate to this section of the registry:

  5. In the right pane right-click and delete the entry "UpperFilters"
  6. Then again, in the right pane right-click and delete the entry "LowerFilters"
  7. Close the registry editor
  8. Reboot

That should fix it up for you. If you have any additional problems please be sure to visit the G³ Forum and ask for additional assistance.
