Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP
There are people who want to do this. I am, honestly, not sure why. It doesn't seem to break anything (I've tested it) that seems to matter on low-scale networks here in a home but, well, I'm pretty sure that you'd not want to do this in an enterprise setting and that any security risks that might be "fixed" by disabling this would be more easily repaired by, oh, installing and configuring a firewall.
Anyhow, if you MUST believe the hysteria:
- Click the Start button
- Click Run...
- Type Control and click OK
- Click on Classic View if you're not already able to see the Network Connections applet
- Open the Network Connections applet
- Find your Local Area Net Connection and right click on it
- Select properties
- On the General tab click on the Advanced button
- Click on the WINS tab
- Click Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP
- Click Okay until all the new windows are closed
- Reboot
When stuff breaks please feel free to join us in the G³ Forum for assistance in getting your network running properly again with all the peripherals you've added.
