Accessing the Microsoft Newsgroups

Posting at Microsoft Newsgroups:
There is a great deal of experienced computer users willing to give you free help. They are often IT workers, Microsoft MVPs (Most Valuable Professionals) or end-users just like you. Most of them are willing to help provided you post your questions properly. While there is no standard format you should mention the exact problem you are having, what your operating system is, what symptoms you're having, what you've done to fix the problem, and sometimes it helps to include your computer specs. Post only to one group and post to the nearest one pertaining to your question(s) or problem(s). If you feel that you must post to more than one group then it should be done by posting it to one or more groups at one time by adding more groups to the news server group. That way you don't have to go back and fourth between groups and when an answer is posted that is correct other people will know that they don't need to take their time to answer it as well.

Use Outlook Express:
While both Microsoft® and Google® can access these groups, it is generally a slow way to do so and too difficult to bother with. Built into your Operating System is Outlook Express® (OE) which is as good a newsreader as any other application I've come across.

Adding the MSNEWS Newsgroups to OE:

  1. Open Outlook Express
  2. Click on Tools
  3. Click Accounts
  4. Click Add, then submenu News
  5. Enter server of "msnews.microsoft.com" without the quotes
  6. Follow the Wizard
  7. Use a fake email like: realemail@realdomain.com.MUNGE
  8. After the Wizard is complete it will download the groups
  9. Find the ones that interest you or pertain to your problem
  10. Subscribe to them by highlighting them and pressing subscribe
