Changing the Owner and Organization Information

Press WinKey + Pause/Break key to see the owner and organization (if one) that your PC is registered to. The following explains how you can change this information. But, if you bought a used computer you should reformat the entire thing and reinstall Windows (be sure you have the full Windows install disk before attempting such). Doing so will ensures that the system is clean and that you're not going to be held accountable for anything unsavory left on the hard drive by the previous owner. If, for some reason, you still wish to change the owner and organization information here's how you do it.

 Before attempting the following make sure you read and understand Registry Editing Warning.

  1. Click the Start button
  2. Click Run...
  3. Type regedit and click OK
  4. In the Registry Editor:

    For 98 and ME navigate to the following key and open it:


    For 2000 and XP navigate to the following key and open it:


  5. Right-click the RegisteredOwner - REG_SZ value
  6. Select Modify
  7. Set the value as you wish it to be
  8. Repeat Steps 6 and 7 for the RegisteredOrganization - REG_SZ value
  9. Close the registry editor
  10. Reboot for the changes to take effect
